The Adoption Process
What to Expect
To see our dogs who are currently looking for a home, please take a look on the ‘Our Dogs’ page. You can also find up to date information about our available dogs on our Instagram.
We use a three-step process to help us decide whether potential adopters are the right fit for a Lucky’s dog and to ensure that our dogs are matched to the perfect forever family.
The three-steps are as follows:
Step 1 - Adoption Form
Please give as much information as possible on the form - it is our first impression of you and your lifestyle. We like to know about your home, your walks and more importantly about YOU so that we can ensure our dogs will fit into your day-to-day life.
Please note: forms that are incomplete or lack thorough answers will not be considered until more information is added.
Step 2 - Phone Call
If you are successful with your adoption form, your application will be taken to the next step. You will receive an email from us with a list of areas to research and a date and time will be arranged for your phone call.
The phone interview takes approx. 1 - 1.5 hours. We run through your form to ensure we have all the correct information and we also talk through typical training and behaviour scenarios that can occur with a dog.
Here are some of the key training elements we will want to discuss with you at this stage:
- chewing, excessive barking and jumping up
- toilet training
- crate training and separation anxiety
- introductions and socialisation
- fear and reactivity
- boundaries
This is your chance to shine and show us what you know and what you have researched! It also gives you the opportunity to ask us any questions you may have about our process and the dogs you may be interested in.
Step 3 - Home Check
If you are successful in the phone call, we will then go on to carry out a virtual home check. This gives us the opportunity to meet you (and any other family members who live in your home) and for you to meet us. Our main priority is to make sure your home and garden is safe for a dog and to run through any final questions we might have.
If you are successful, we will inform you and work with you to find a dog to match you and your lifestyle!
If for any reason you are unsuccessful, you will receive feedback as to why.
Matching!
During matching we take everything we have learnt about you, your home and your lifestyle, and we work with you to assess which Lucky’s dog will be a great fit. Of course we do take your preference into consideration but we really recommend remaining open during this process.
Once matched we will connect you with the foster family for your dog and coordinate a meet and greet. Depending on a variety of factors including distance and whether you already have a dog, sometimes all that is needed is one meeting, and other times a couple of visits works best for everyone involved! Your dog’s foster family knows the most about your matched dog, so ask questions and they’ll happily share all they know.
From there, all that is left is a little bit of paperwork to make it all official!
We know that as a rescue, our adoption process is extremely thorough, but we are really proud about the lengths we go to to ensure that we match dogs to families who they will be able to thrive with - FOREVER. And we know that those who are truly dedicated to adopting a Lucky’s dog will appreciate our thorough process.
