WHAT MAKES A GOOD FOSTERER?

WHAT WOULD BE EXPECTED?

As a charity, we would support you in your fostering journey.

We would require weekly updates, lots of pictures and videos; and consistent communication with you so that we can get a good picture of the dog in your care and thus, find them the best forever home.

Our dogs have never lived in a home before so they will need lots of help to become confident in a home setting.

The dogs will also require basic training (commands, toileting, walking, boundaries, socialising) and we will be on hand to discuss and guide you in this process. We would also expect fosterers to build up their own understanding of basic training. Some resources to support you with this can be found on our ‘Get Prepared’ page.

We will also need you to take part in meet & greets with potential owners. We may even need your support in making decisions with regards to suitability of applicants, as you will get to know the dog in your care really well.

We ask that our fosterers cover the following costs:

  • £20 towards the cost of transport

  • The cost of food and treats for the dog

  • The cost of basics - bed/toys/crate/lead/collar/harness/bowls (the fosterer can keep these items once the dog has gone on to its forever home)

  • The cost of insurance

Please note: if the dog in question had any pre-existing medical conditions, which could not be covered by insurance, Lucky’s would cover the costs associated with this.

ARE THERE ANY COSTS INVOLVED?

It could be a matter of weeks or it may be months!

We do not have a time frame for how long it will take to get a dog adopted so, unless we have a previously stated time frame, fosterers should be prepared to have a dog in their care for months.

HOW LONG WOULD I BE FOSTERING FOR?

HOW DO I APPLY TO BE A FOSTER?

You can apply to foster with us by completing one of our adoption application forms. Simply select the option that says ‘foster’ and then complete the form, giving us as much information - about yourself, your experience with dogs and your home - as possible.

Matching our dogs with a well-suited fosterer is just as important to us as matching them with their perfect forever family. For this reason, we use the same ‘3 step process’ that we apply when matching our dogs with an adopter.

Step 1 - Complete the foster form - give as much detail as possible.

Step 2 - A phone call - this will be about an hour long and will give us chance to run through your form, get to know you a little better and will also give you the chance to ask any questions you might have.

Step 3 - A home check - should you be successful with the phone interview, we will assess if your house and garden will be safe for a dog. This is usually done by video call.

If unsuccessful, you will be given feedback as to why.
